Yerba Mate

Yerba Mate is a South American evergreen tree from the holly family, best known as the source of the traditional energizing beverage enjoyed throughout Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The leaves contain caffeine, theobromine, and a rich profile of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making mate one of the most nutritious herbal drinks in the world. The beverage is traditionally prepared by steeping dried leaves in hot water and sipped through a filtered metal straw called a bombilla.

Beyond its value as a functional tea plant, Yerba Mate is an attractive, low-maintenance evergreen with glossy olive-green leaves, fragrant clusters of small white flowers, and ornamental red berries. It thrives in warm, humid climates and grows well in the ground or in containers, preferring partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. In tropical settings like Bocas del Toro, Yerba Mate is an excellent addition to edible landscapes and food forest plantings.
