We are a small, family-owned farm located on Isla Solarte, a tiny Caribbean island off the coast of Panama. Our past is crucial to who we are today. Discovering how our ancestors lived and how they grew food and survived is essential to how we farm today.
We purchased this plot of lush jungle about 10 years ago with the idea of growing and raising our own food. With no electricity, no water, and very little experience, this was a huge challenge to undertake. But with enough determination, a strong will, and a lot of research we started laying the foundation for our new life. Our first step was to install a small solar system, rainwater catchment, and a simple hut. With this, we set off to new beginnings.
On Isla Solarte it rains year-round, so we had to make sure that whatever we did here would be able to withstand the elements. With that in mind, we started to build our first greenhouse using wood harvested from our own farm. This project was completed in about 3 months and allowed us to start growing plants that otherwise would not have survived the heavy rain.
Since then, we've continued to expand our farm. In 2020, we introduced a self-contained aquaponics system into our greenhouse, complete with koi and tilapia fish ponds. Our greenhouse now hosts over a thousand plants nourished by water from the ponds, which gets purified by lily pads, water lettuce, and other aquatic plants. Additionally, we now raise our own livestock, including sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, and guinea fowls, supplying us with fresh eggs daily.
We have worked hard over the years to create healthy soil using regenerative methods that allow us to grow nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. As of today, we have over 200 fruit trees, including papaya, banana, guanabana, mango, avocado, citrus, starfruit, jackfruit, and others. We continue working toward our goal of planting around 600 fruit trees across the farm.
For us, the resources and processes we use to grow our food are key. From the soil we grow our food in, to the water we use to nurture it, we strive to utilize our resources responsibly and efficiently.
All in all, our family farm is a one-of-a-kind place. We take great pride in what we do, and we hope that by doing so, it will inspire others.
We look forward to sharing our experiences and progress with all of you.
